9-Ball vs 10-Ball: What’s the Difference?

Both 9-ball and 10-ball are rotation games where the cue ball must contact the lowest-numbered object ball first, but the formats reward different skills.

9-ball

Nine object balls are used. Players must contact the lowest-numbered ball first, and the game is won when the 9-ball is legally pocketed under the agreed rules.

10-ball

Ten object balls are used. The added ball and commonly stricter called-shot rules make patterns and position play more demanding.

Which should beginners try?

9-ball is usually faster to understand and play. Once your cue-ball control improves, 10-ball is a useful step up in precision and planning.
